H. ROUSE CAFFEY, WHO SERVED TWO TENURES AS THE CHANCELLOR OF LSUA, DIED SATURDAY AT THE AGE OF 83. CAFFEY WAS CHANCELLOR OF LSUA FROM 1981 THROUGH 1984. HE RETURNED TO THE SCHOOL AS INTERIM CHANCELLOR FOR THE FALL SEMESTER IN 2007 AND SERVED UNTIL CURRENT CHANCELLOR DAVID MANUEL WAS HIRED THE FOLLOWING SPRING. FUNERAL SERVICES ARE SCHEDULED FOR 11 A.M. TUESDAY AT CALVARY BAPTIST CHURCH IN ALEXANDRIA. VISITATION IS 4-8 P.M. TODAY AT HIXSON BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME IN ALEXANDRIA.

HE SAYS PARISH HEALTH CENTERS WILL HAVE FREE FLU SHOTS AVAILABLE TO THOUSANDS, OR THEY CAN BE EASILY OBTAINED THROUGH YOUR DOCTOR'S OFFICE OR, IN MANY CASES AT YOUR LOCAL PHARMACY, AT MINIMAL COST.

A TEACHER AT A PRIVATE SCHOOL HAS BEEN ARRESTED ON SUSPICION OF CALLING IN A BOMB THREAT AT THREE PRIVATE SCHOOLS IN OUACHITA PARISH LAST WEEK. 30 YEAR OLD DAVID REYNA WHO TEACHES SPANISH AT RIVER OAKS SCHOOL, WAS BOOKED INTO THE OUACHITA CORRECTIONAL CENTER ON FRIDAY AFTER HE WAS ARRESTED BY SHERIFF’S OFFICE INVESTIGATORS. HE’S BEING HELD WITHOUT BOND PENDING A COURT HEARING. HE WAS BOOKED WITH ONE COUNT OF COMMUNICATING FALSE INFORMATION OF A PLANNED BOMBING OF SCHOOL PROPERTY. THE HEADMASTER AT RIVER OAKS SCHOOL SAYS REYNA WAS A QUIET MAN, GIVING NO INDICATION OF A TROUBLED LIFE.

THE LSU TIGERS ARE RANKED FOURTH IN THE COUNTRY, BUT THEY ARE NOT PLAYING THE LIKE THE FOURTH BEST TEAM IN THE NATION. THE BAYOU BENGALS WERE UNIMPRESSIVE IN THEIR 38-22 VICTORY OVER TOWSON. IN A MONTH, THE PHELPS CORRECTIONAL CENTER IN DEQUINCY IS SET TO CLOSE AND LOCAL OFFICIALS ARE TRYING TO COME UP WITH IDEAS TO MAKE SURE WORKERS AT THE PRISON CONTINUE TO RECEIVE A PAY CHECK AFTER NOV. 1ST. DEQUINCY MAYOR LAWRENCE HENAGAN SAYS OVER TWO-HUNDRED PEOPLE WILL SOON BE UNEMPLOYED. THE JINDAL ADMINISTRATION ANNOUNCED LAST MONTH ITS CLOSING THE PHELPS CORRECTIONAL CENTER AND MOVING THE INMATES TO ANGOLA. SOME WORKERS AT PHELPS COULD BE HIRED AT ANGOLA AS WELL. BUT HENAGAN SAYS HE AND OTHER ELECTED OFFICIALS IN SOUTHWEST LOUISIANA DON’T WANT TO SEE THE 269 PRISON WORKERS LEAVE THE AREA. THEY ARE NOW LOOKING AT OTHER USES FOR THE SOON TO BE CLOSED PRISON.

A LOUISIANA DEATH ROW INMATE IS A FREE MAN AFTER DNA TESTS EXONERATED HIM OF THE MURDER AND RAPE OF HIS STEP-COUSIN. THIRTY-EIGHT- YEAR-OLD DAMON THIBODAUX OF MARRERO SPENT 15 YEARS ON DEATH ROW. LOUISIANA ACLU EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR MARJORIE ESMAN SAYS THIBODEAUX GAVE A FALSE CONFESSION WHICH LED TO THE WRONGFUL CONVICTION. THIBODEAUX WAS WRONGFULLY CONVICTED IN THE MURDER OF HIS 14-YEAR-OLD STEP COUSIN, CRYSTAL CHAMPAGNE. HER BODY WAS FOUND IN JULY OF 1996. ESMAN SAYS SIX PEOPLE HAVE BEEN EXONERATED FROM LOUISIANA'S DEATH ROW SINCE 2000.
