TRAGEDY YESTERDAY IN EVANGELINE PARISH, WHEN A SCHOOL CROSSING GUARD WAS
STRUCK AND KILLED DURING A TWO CAR CRASH NEAR VIDRINE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL. STATE POLICE TROOPER STEPHEN HAMMONS SAYS 60-YEAR-OLD RESERVE DEPUTY JOHN GRANGER IS THE VICTIM. HAMMONS SAYS THE WRECK HAPPENED AT THE CROSSING OF HIGHWAYS 10 AND 376 WHILE GRANGER WAS DIRECTING TRAFFIC. AS OF NOW NO CITATIONS HAVE BEEN ISSUED TO EITHER DRIVER, BUT THE INVESTIGATION IS UNDERWAY.

THE FIRST OF THREE PUBLIC FORUMS WERE HELD LAST NIGHT TO GET PUBLIC INPUT TO AID IN THE HIRING OF A NEW RAPIDES PARISH SCHOOL SUPERINTENDENT.IN THE END THOUGH, THERE WERE AS MANY TEACHERS AND SCHOOL DISTRICT EMPLOYEES AS PARENTS. MEMBERS OF THE SCHOOL BOARD WERE ASKED, BY THE CONSULTING FIRM CONDUCTING THE FORUM, TO LEAVE THE TIOGA HIGH SCHOOL AUDITORIUM BEFORE THE FORUM BEGAN SO MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC WOULD BE COMFORTABLE EXPRESSING THEIR OPINIONS. HOWEVER, AT LEAST FOUR MEMBERS DECIDED TO STAY. THE NEXT TWO FORUMS WILL BE SEPT. 13 AT 6 P.M. AT PEABODY MAGNET HIGH SCHOOL AND SEPT. 20 AT 6 P.M. AT GLENMORA HIGH SCHOOL.

AFTER A VERY HOT WEEK ACROSS THE STATE, LOUISIANANS CAN EXPECT SOME FALL-LIKE WEATHER THIS WEEKEND. STATE CLIMATOLOGIST BARRY KEIM SAYS WE MAY SEE SOME BRIEF SCATTERED RAIN SATURDAY, AND WAKE UP TO NOTICEABLY LOWER TEMPERATURES FOR SUNDAY AND INTO THE WORK WEEK.

AFTER THE SEARCH OF A BAYWOOD DRIVE IN PINEVILLE, 5 PEOPLE WERE ARRESTED AND CHARGED WITH AN ASSORTMENT OF DRUG RELATED CHARGES. DETECTIVES HAD RECEIVED INFORMATION ABOUT A POSSIBLE METH LAB AT THE LOCATION AND AFTER SURVEILLANCE WAS CONDUCTED, AND DETECTIVES OBTAINED A SEARCH WARRANT. WHAT THEY FOUND WAS SIX PEOPLE INSIDE THE HOUSE, ALONG WITH MARIJUANA, METH AND AN ASSORTMENT OF OTHER DRUGS. ONE SUSPECT ESCAPED DURING THE RAID AND IS BEING SOUGHT BY AUTHORITIES.

TODAY OPENS THE 3RD ANNUAL LOUISIANA 2ND AMENDMENT SALES TAX HOLIDAY. LOUISIANA DEPARTMENT OF REVENUE SPOKESPERSON BYRON HENDERSON SAYS OVER THE NEXT THREE DAYS, A SPECIFIC LIST OF HUNTING ITEMS WILL BE EXEMPT FROM THE 4% STATE SALES TAX AND ALL LOCAL SALES TAXES THROUGHOUT LOUISIANA. HE SAYS THE EXEMPTION APPLIES TO A WIDE RANGE OF FIREARMS AND OTHER OUTDOOR GEAR. A FULL LIST OF ELIGIBLE ITEMS, EXCLUDED ITEMS AND SPECIAL PROVISIONS CAN BE FOUND AT REVENUE.LOUISIANA.GOV.

THE LSU BOARD OF SUPERVISORS WILL VOTE TODAY ON WHETHER OR NOT THE LSU ATHLETICS FUND WOULD TRANSFER $7.2 MILLION ANNUALLY TO SUPPORT UNIVERSITY ACADEMICS. ASSOCIATE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR HERB VINCENT SAYS THEY'RE NOT AWARE OF ANOTHER UNIVERSITY THAT HAS AN ANNUAL PLANNED AGREEMENT LIKE THIS IN PLACE. THE DEAL WOULD ALSO GIVE THE UNIVERSITY A PERCENTAGE OF SURPLUS FROM SPORTING EVENTS, SHOULD THE ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT HAVE A PARTICULARLY GOOD YEAR. VINCENT SAYS ITS THE DUTY OF ATHLETICS DEPARTMENT TO PLAY A ROLE IN THE MISSION OF THE UNIVERSITY.

THE LSU SYSTEM'S TOP LAWYER ANNOUNCED THURSDAY THAT HE IS RESIGNING FROM THE JOB, AMID A CONTINUED SHAKE-UP OF SYSTEM LEADERSHIP SINCE GOV. BOBBY JINDAL'S APPOINTEES TOOK CONTROL OF THE SYSTEM GOVERNING BOARD. RAY LAMONICA SAID HE WAS QUITTING HIS POSITION AS GENERAL COUNSEL, EFFECTIVE FRIDAY. HE WILL RETURN TO TEACHING AT THE UNIVERSITY LAW SCHOOL. LAMONICA, A FORMER U.S. ATTORNEY WHO HAS BEEN THE UNIVERSITY SYSTEM'S CHIEF LAWYER FOR MORE THAN 10 YEARS, GAVE NO REASON FOR LEAVING IN THE ANNOUNCEMENT AND DIDN'T RESPOND TO A REQUEST FOR COMMENT.

ENTERGY HAS SHAKEN UP ITS MANAGEMENT, AMID COMPLAINTS AND FILED LAWSUITS OVER WHAT SOME FEEL IS THE SLOW RESTORATION OF POWER AFTER HURRICANE ISAAC. ENTERGY PRESIDENT BILL MOHL WILL BE REASSIGNED TO NEW YORK. CHAIRMAN AND CEO J. WAYNE LEONARD WILL RETIRE EARLY NEXT YEAR. THE CITY OF MANDEVILLE HAD TO DEAL WITH A STINKY PROBLEM FOLLOWING HURRICANE ISAAC --- THOUSANDS DEAD ANIMAL CARCASSES WASHING ASHORE ONCE WATERS FROM LAKE PONTCHARTRAIN RECEDED. MANDEVILLE MAYOR DONALD VILLERE SAYS SO FAR PUBLIC WORKS CREWS PICKED UP ABOUT 1200 DEAD NUTRIA, FISH AND EVEN WILD HOGS AFTER THE STORM CAME THROUGH. HE SAYS ALL OF THE ANIMALS WERE DISPOSED OF IN A LANDFILL.

FEMA HAS ADDED FIVE MORE PARISHES ELIGIBLE FOR AID. RESIDENTS WHO SUFFERED DAMAGES AS THE RESULT OF ISAAC IN ASSUMPTION, ST. HELENA, ST. JAMES, TERREBONNE AND WASHINGTON PARISHES NOW QUALIFY FOR INDIVIDUAL DISASTER ASSISTANCE.

NATALIE WAS BORN AUG. 13 TO 42-YEAR-OLD GINGER. SANCTUARY OFFICIALS SUSPECT THE FATHER WAS CONAN, WHO FATHERED ANOTHER CHIMP BORN ON VALENTINE'S DAY AND ONE BORN IN 2007.

A BAYOU VISTA WOMAN IS CHARGED WITH HAVING SEX WITH A TEENAGE BOY. ST. MARY PARISH DEPUTIES SAYS 23-YEAR-OLD KAYLA BONNETTE IS CHARGED WITH FELONY CARNAL KNOWLEDGE OF A JUVENILE. THE BOY WAS 16 WHEN THE CONTACT OCCURRED. A COMPLAINT ABOUT BONNETTE WAS FILE TWO WEEKS AGO. SHE WAS ARRESTED AND LATER RELEASED ON $5-THOUSAND BOND.
