HURRICANE ISAAC HAS COME ASHORE NOT ONCE BUT TWICE IN THE PAST 24 HOURS, THE FIRST TIME LAST NIGHT AROUND SUPPER TIME AND AGAIN EARLY THIS MORNING. THE STORM THEN STALLED AND SAT AT THE MOUTH OF THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER FOR SEVERAL HOURS. THE STORM HAS BEGIN TO MOVE AGAIN AN A NW DIRECTION. MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS ARE AT 80 MILES PER HOUR. FORECASTERS with the NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER IN MIAMI SAY THE EXPECT THE STORM WILL STILL HAVE HURRICANE FORCE WINDS AS IT MOVES THROUGH CENTRAL LOUISIANA LATER THIS AFTERNOON. THE STORM WILL ALSO BE A MAJOR RAIN EVENT, WITH THE POTENTIAL OF DROPPING UP TO 7 INCHES OF RAIN.

AUTHORITIES SAY STORM SURGE DRIVEN BY HURRICANE ISAAC HAS OVERTOPPED A LEVEE IN A THINLY POPULATED PART OF PLAQUEMINES PARISH, SOUTH OF NEW ORLEANS.
PARISH SPOKESMAN CAITLIN CAMPBELL SAID AN 18-MILE STRETCH FROM THE ST. BERNARD PARISH LINE AT BRAITHWAITE SOUTH TO WHITE DITCH WAS TAKING WATER AND HOMES WERE FLOODING. AN EVACUATION ORDER HAD BEEN ISSUED AS ISAAC APPROACHED. SHERIFF'S DEPUTIES FROM ST. BERNARD AND PLAQUEMINES PARISHES WERE GOING HOUSE-TO-HOUSE GETTING RESIDENTS WHO'D REMAINED IN THE AREA TO MOVE TO HIGHER GROUND.

BECAUSE OF HURRICANE ISAAC, ALL SCHOOLS IN CENTRAL LOUISIANA, ACADIANA AND THE CAJUN PRAIRIE ARE CLOSED. THAT GOES FOR LSUA,, LSUE, LC, AND NORTH WESTERN. MOST WILL BE CLOSED TOMORROW AS WELL. STATE GOVERNMENT OFFICES WILL BE CLOSED THROUGHOUT LOUISIANA ON WEDNESDAY. COMMISSIONER OF ADMINISTRATION PAUL RAINWATER SAID OFFICIALS ARE WATCHING THE PROGRESS OF THE STORM AND MAY MAKE FURTHER ANNOUNCEMENTS ABOUT OFFICE CLOSINGS.

TOWN OF BALL: SANDBAGS CAN BE PICKED UP AT THE TOWN'S UTILITY OFFICE. LIMIT OF 6 SANDBAGS PER EXTERIOR DOOR.

CITY OF PINEVILLE:
AT THE PUBLIC WORKS CITY BARN, LOCATED AT 405 SANDERS STREET. FOLLOW THE ASSEMBLY LINE NEAR THE CITY GAS PUMPS, AND SHOW PROOF OF RESIDENCY, AND THE SANDBAGS WILL BE LOADED INTO YOUR VEHICLE.

CITY OF ALEXANDRIA: BRINGHURST PARK, FRANK O. HUNTER PARK, CHEATHAM PARK, AND THE JOHNNY DOWNS COMPLEX, BEGINNING TUESDAY MORNING, AUGUST 28TH. *NOTE: A READY-MADE SANDBAG LOCATION WILL BE OPEN AT THE ALEXANDRIA CONSOLIDATED CITY COMPOUND, 2021 INDUSTRIAL PARK ROAD (OFF HIGHWAY 1 NORTH) FOR THE ELDERLY AND INFIRMED ONLY.

WOODWORTH: THE TOWN OF WOODWORTH HAS SAND AND SAND BAGS AT WOODWORTH FIRE STATION #1, 9059 HWY 165 S. IT IS A FILL-YOUR-OWN LOCATION.

AVOYELLES PARISH: RESIDENTS CAN PICK-UP READY-MADE SANDBAGS AT THREE LOCATIONS IN AVOYELLES PARISH: MARKSVILLE CITY HALL, MANSURA CITY HALL AND THE
BUNKIE CITY YARD.

VERNON PARISH: SANDBAGS WILL BE AVAILABLE AT THE PUBLIC WORKS YARD, AT 201 REDTOWN ROAD.


CLOSURES…

THE RAPIDES PARISH COURTHOUSE WILL BE CLOSED ON WEDNESDAY, AUG. 29.

RAPIDES PARISH POLICE JURY OFFICES WILL BE CLOSED AUG. 29, SAYS OLIVER OVERTON.

THE ELDERLY MEAL SITE IN AVOYELLES, CATAHOULA, CONCORDIA, GRANT, LASALLE, RAPIDES AND WINN PARISHES WILL BE CLOSED WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY.

RAPIDES COUNCIL ON AGING, INC. WILL BE CLOSED WEDNESDAY, AUG. 29 AND THURSDAY, AUG. 30. ALL SERVICES WILL RESUME ON FRIDAY, AUG. 31. ALL HOME DELIVERED MEALS WILL BE DELIVERED ON FRIDAY, AUG. 31.

ALL LOCATIONS OF THE RAPIDES PARISH LIBRARY WILL BE CLOSED ALL DAY AUG. 29 AND 30, 2012. ALL LIBRARY LOCATIONS HOPE TO OPEN AT THEIR REGULARLY SCHEDULED TIMES ON FRIDAY, AUG. 31. THE RAPIDES PARISH LIBRARY WEBSITE IS WWW.RPL.ORG.
