A PUSH TO RESTRUCTURE THE WAY LOUISIANA'S PUBLIC SCHOOL TEACHERS ARE PAID, TO GIVE SALARY BOOSTS BASED ON PERFORMANCE, HAS SUPPORT FROM DEMOCRATIC U.S. SEN. MARY LANDRIEU. THE CONCEPT IS ONE OF REPUBLICAN GOV. BOBBY JINDAL'S EDUCATION OVERHAUL IDEAS FOR THE LEGISLATIVE SESSION. LANDRIEU SAID MONDAY SHE ALSO BACKS CHANGES TO TEACHER JOB PROTECTION LAWS, KNOWN AS TENURE. ONE AREA OF DISAGREEMENT, HOWEVER, IS VOUCHERS. THE CREATION OF A STATEWIDE PROGRAM THAT USES TAXPAYER MONEY TO SEND STUDENTS TO PRIVATE SCHOOLS IS A KEY PART OF JINDAL'S PROPOSALS, BUT LANDRIEU SAYS IT SHOULDN'T BE THE CENTERPIECE OF EDUCATION OVERHAUL.

U.S. SEN. MARY LANDRIEU SAYS SHE "DEFINITELY" PLANS TO RUN FOR A FOURTH TERM IN TWO YEARS. THE DEMOCRAT FROM NEW ORLEANS TOSSED ASIDE SPECULATION THAT SHE WAS GOING TO END HER CONGRESSIONAL CAREER AFTER 18 YEARS IN THE SENATE. DETAILS IN THE LAWSUIT ARE NUMEROUS, AND THE STORY IS COMPLICATED. SMITH SAYS HIS CLIENTS WERE OSTRACIZED FOR BEING "WHISTLEBLOWERS" TO WRONG DOING BY THEIR SUPERIORS. STATE POLICE SUPERINTENDENT COL. MIKE EDMONSON, WHO IS NAMED IN THE SUIT, SAYS IT HAS LITTLE MERIT, BUT HE'S ORDERED A FULL INVESTIGATION.

LOUISIANA'S SUPERINTENDENT OF STATE POLICE, COL. MIKE EDMONSON, IS TAKING A NEW LEADERSHIP ROLE OUTSIDE OF THE STATE. IN SEPTEMBER, EDMONSON WILL BECOME PRESIDENT OF THE STATE/PROVINCIAL DIVISION OF THE INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF CHIEFS OF POLICE. EDMONSON SAYS IT'S THE FIRST TIME A LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICIAL FROM LOUISIANA HAS EVER BEEN IN THAT JOB. HE SAYS THE POSITION OVERSEES POLICIES INVOLVING CHIEFS OF POLICE OF ALL U.S. STATES, CANADA, U.S. TERRITORIES AND CANADIAN PROVINCES. THE ORGANIZATION PROMOTES COOPERATION AND PARTNERSHIPS AMONG POLICE LEADERS AND OFFICIALS AROUND THE WORLD.
