ALEXANDRIA POLICE REPORT ONE OF THEIR OFFICERS SHOT AN ARMED SUSPECT YESTERDAY MORNING. STATE POLICE ARE INVESTIGATING THE INCIDENT, IN WHICH OFFICERS RESPONDED TO A DISTURBANCE CALL AND FOUND 35-YEAR-OLD ERIC MOORE BRANDISHING A WEAPON. BECAUSE OF MOORE'S ACTIONS, THE OFFICER FIRED HIS WEAPON; HITTING AND WOUNDING MOORE. MOORE'S CONDITION IS SEVERE AT THIS TIME. AS IS NORMAL PROTOCOL, THE OFFICER WAS PLACED ON ADMINISTRATIVE LEAVE DURING THE INVESTIGATION OF THE SHOOTING.

THE RAPIDES PARISH SCHOOL BOARD'S EDUCATION COMMITTEE YESTERDAY PASSED A MOTION APPROVING ATTENDANCE ZONES FOR SCHOOLS THAT WILL BE IMPACTED BY WOODWORTH’S NEW CAROLINE DORMAN JUNIOR HIGH. CAROLINE DORMAN JUNIOR HIGH IS SCHEDULED TO OPEN IN THE FALL IN WOODWORTH. BRAME JUNIOR HIGH IN ALEXANDRIA WILL LOSE 60 STUDENTS TO THE NEW SCHOOL. A TOTAL OF 60 STUDENTS WILL ATTEND DORMAN WHO ARE CURRENTLY IN THE CHEROKEE ELEMENTARY AND HORSESHOE ELEMENTARY ZONES IN ALEXANDRIA. ABOUT FIVE STUDENTS WILL GO TO DORMAN FROM FOREST HILL ELEMENTARY, AND ABOUT THREE SEVENTH- AND EIGHTH-GRADERS WILL GO TO THE WOODWORTH SCHOOL FROM RAPIDES HIGH SCHOOL. THE CHANGES MUST STILL BE APPROVED BY THE FULL BOARD AT ITS NEXT MEETING.

FUNERAL SERVICES ARE BEING HELD TODAY FOR FORMER STATE SENATE PRESIDENT SAMMY NUNEZ, WHO DIED SUNDAY FROM PNEUMONIA. FORMER GOV. EDWIN EDWARDS WILL GIVE THE EULOGY AND ARCHBISHOP GREGORY AYMOND IS CONDUCTING THE FUNERAL SERVICE. NUNEZ, AN EDWARDS ALLY, CHAMPIONED COMMERCIAL FISHERMEN, CREATION OF THE SUPERDOME AND CREATION OF THE STATE REVENUE ESTIMATING CONFERENCE WHICH TELLS LAW MAKERS HOW MUCH MONEY THEY CAN SPEND EACH YEAR. HE SERVED 30 YEARS IN THE LEGISLATURE BEGINNING BACK IN 1964.

GOV. THE REPUBLICAN GOVERNOR HAS MADE OVERHAUL OF LOUISIANA'S ELEMENTARY AND SECONDARY EDUCATION SYSTEM THE CENTERPIECE OF HIS PLANS FOR THE UPCOMING LEGISLATIVE SESSION THAT BEGINS IN MARCH. JINDAL SAID THE STATE MUST RESTRUCTURE ITS EDUCATION SYSTEM TO LIFT ITSELF OUT OF POVERTY AND ATTRACT JOBS.

NEW ORLEANS SAINTS HEAD COACH SEAN PAYTON MET WITH REPORTERS YESTERDAY AFTERNOON TO GIVE A RECAP OF THE 2011 SEASON, AND LOOKED AHEAD TO 2012. FORMER NEW ROADS MAYOR TOMMY NELSON HAS BEEN SENTENCED TO 11 YEARS IN PRISON FOR HIS ROLE IN A BRIBERY CASE THAT RESULTED IN CHARGES AGAINST SEVERAL OTHER LOUISIANA ELECTED OFFICIALS. ON TUESDAY, U.S. DISTRICT JUDGE BRIAN JACKSON IN BATON ROUGE ORDERED NELSON TO REPORT TO PRISON BY FEB. 20. A JURY CONVICTED NELSON IN JUNE OF RACKETEERING, WIRE FRAUD AND OTHER CHARGES. PROSECUTORS SAID NELSON ACCEPTED MORE THAN $22,000 IN BRIBES FROM UNDERCOVER AGENTS PROMOTING A FICTITIOUS GARBAGE CAN-CLEANING BUSINESS IN EXCHANGE FOR HIS PLEDGE TO HELP THEM SECURE MUNICIPAL BUSINESS. NELSON WAS THE SECOND PUBLIC OFFICIAL CONVICTED OF CHARGES STEMMING FROM THE UNDERCOVER PROBE. JURORS CONVICTED FORMER WHITE CASTLE MAYOR MAURICE BROWN IN MARCH OF LAST YEAR

THE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND HOSPITALS IS PARTNERING WITH THE MARCH OF DIMES IN EFFORTS THAT WOULD REDUCE THE STATE'S PREMATURITY RATE. HE SAYS LOUISIANA HAS A HISTORY FOR RANKING AMONG THE BOTTOM TWO OR THREE STATES IN THE COUNTRY IN PREMATURITY AND INFANT MORTALITY RATES.

THE AMERICAN SOCIETY OF CIVIL ENGINEERS WILL RELEASE A REPORT CARD TODAY THAT ASSIGNS GRADES TO NINE CRITICAL INFRASTRUCTURE AREAS IN LOUISIANA. ASCE SPOKESPERSON MARK LAMBERT SAYS THE REPORT'S FINDINGS ARE BASED ON STUDIES BY SCIENTISTS ON CRITICAL AREAS TO LOUISIANA SUCH AS SAFETY, MOBILITY AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT EFFORTS. LAMBERT SAYS THE REPORT IS FACT BASED, NON-BIASED AND NON-POLITICAL. HE SAYS THE PURPOSE OF THE STUDY IS TO GIVE OFFICIALS THE TOOLS THEY NEED TO MAKE RESPONSIBLE DECISIONS ABOUT THE FUTURE OF OUR STATE.

WITNESSES TALKED ABOUT RICK SEATON'S BEHAVIOR AND COMMENTS MADE ABOUT THE VICTIM BEFORE HE ALLEGEDLY TOOK HER TO GOVERNMENT PLAZA, WHERE THE ALLEGED ASSAULT OCCURRED. A FORENSIC WITNESS TESTIFIED THAT DNA COLLECTED AT THE SCENE MATCHED SEATON AND THE VICTIM.

A VIDEO THAT'S GONE VIRAL ON THE INTERNET AND PURPORTS TO SHOW ALABAMA FANS ABUSING AN UNCONSCIOUS LSU FAN AFTER BEATING THE TIGERS IN THE BCS FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME HAS CAUGHT THE ATTENTION OF LOUISIANA AUTHORITIES. IT ENDS WITH A MAN IN A RED ALABAMA JACKET SIMULATING A SEX ACT ON A MAN WHO IS WEARING AN LSU-PURPLE T-SHIRT AND WHO APPARENTLY HAD PASSED OUT ON A RESTAURANT COUNTER AFTER THE JAN. 9 GAME. ASSISTANT DISTRICT ATTORNEY CHRIS BOWMAN SAID THE VIDEO WAS SENT TO POLICE FOR INVESTIGATION. BUT NEW ORLEANS POLICE SAY THEY CANNOT INVESTIGATE UNLESS THE APPARENT VICTIM FILES A COMPLAINT. SO FAR, HE HASN’T.
