EMAILING, PAYING BILLS ONLINE, SOCIAL NETWORKING AND DELIVERY COMPETITION HAS FINANCIALLY CRIPPLED THE U.S. POSTAL SERVICE, WHICH IS CONSIDERING CLOSING PARTS OF TWO MAJOR LOUISIANA MAIL PROCESSING CENTERS, YET SPARING BATON ROUGE.
THE SERVICE IS STUDYING WHETHER TO SHUT DOWN THE OUTGOING MAIL SECTIONS OF THE LAFAYETTE AND NEW ORLEANS MAIL FACILITIES. THE MOVE WOULD AFFECT 1,000 WORKERS, MOST OF WHOM WOULD GET DIBS ON THE EXPANSION OF A SIMILAR NUMBER OF JOBS IN BATON ROUGE. THE PROPOSAL IS PART OF A NATIONWIDE PLAN TO SHUT DOWN AT LEAST PARTS OF ABOUT 200 MAIL PROCESSING CENTERS ACROSS THE COUNTRY FOR A SERVICE THAT RECENTLY POSTED A $5.1 BILLION LOSS AT THE END OF THE FISCAL YEAR ON SEPT. 30. THE SERVICE HAS WATCHED ITS VOLUME OF MAIL DROP BY 41.1 MILLION PIECES OVER THE LAST FOUR YEARS. THE LOUISIANA MOVE WOULD SAVE $7.3 MILLION A YEAR

A CHRISTMAS ORNAMENT DESIGNED BY LAFAYETTE ARTIST TONY BERNARD WILL SERVE AS LOUISIANA'S OFFICIAL ORNAMENT FOR THE WHITE HOUSE TREE. ONE ADDITIONAL ORNAMENT WAS CREATED FOR SHOWCASING AT THE LOUISIANA GOVERNOR'S MANSION.

THE BIG THANKSGIVING FEAST IS BEHIND US, AND CHRISTMAS PARTIES ARE COMING. HOW DOES ONE AVOID GAINING A LOT OF WEIGHT FOR THE HOLIDAYS? LSU AGCENTER NUTRITIONIST DR. BETH REAMES SAYS MANY JUST LET THE EXTRA COME, THEN WORRY ABOUT LOSING THEM AGAIN AFTER THE NEW YEAR. REAMES SAYS THAT’S SIMPLY NOT A GOOD IDEA. SHE SAYS GIVE YOURSELF SMALL PORTIONS AT HOLIDAY PARTIES & TRY USING
A SMALLER PLATE TO ENCOURAGE THAT. SHE ALSO ADVISES YOU STAND OR SIT AWAY FROM THE FOOD TABLE, SO YOU'RE NOT TEMPTED TO NIBBLE. FYI, THE AVERAGE PERSON GAINS BETWEEN 2 AND 10 POUNDS OVER THE HOLIDAYS.
