IT WILL TAKE A JURY TO DECIDE IF A FORMER RAPIDES PARISH GOVERNMENT OFFICIAL RECEIVED A SWEETHEART DEAL IN EXCHANGE FOR HIS VOTE ON A RESIDENTIAL SUBDIVISION OR WHETHER OR NOT HE WAS THE VICTIM OF A SMEAR CAMPAIGN BY THE SUBDIVISION'S DEVELOPERS. STEVE BORDELON'S BRIBERY TRIAL IN U.S. DISTRICT COURT IN ALEXANDRIA FINALLY GOT UNDER WAY YESTERDAY, AFTER TWO DAYS OF JURY SELECTION. THAT JURY SET WITH THE TASK OF DECIDING IF BORDELON SOLD HIS VOTE WHEN HE WAS A MEMBER OF THE RAPIDES PARISH POLICE JURY. BORDELON WAS INDICTED IN APRIL OF LAST YEAR ON ONE COUNT OF BRIBERY. HE FACES UP TO 10 YEARS IN PRISON AND A FINE IF THE JURY FINDS HIM GUILTY.

THE CENTRAL LOUISIANA HUMAN SERVICES DISTRICT, A NEW LOCAL GOVERNMENT ORGANIZATION CREATED TO TAKE OVERSIGHT OF BEHAVIORAL HEALTH ISSUES IN CENLA AWAY FROM THE STATE'S DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND HOSPITALS, HELD ITS FIRST PUBLIC FORUM AT KEES PARK IN PINEVILLE YESTERDAY. THE FORUM WAS USED AS AN OPPORTUNITY TO INTRODUCED THE BOARD MEMBERS TO THE PUBLIC AND ALSO TOUCHED ON SOME OF THE ISSUES THE DISTRICT WILL OVERSEE. THE BOARD IS EXPECTED TO BE CERTIFIED AS READY IN DECEMBER, CLEARING THE WAY FOR THE HIRING OF AN EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR TO OVERSEE THE DISTRICT.

STATE POLICE REPORT A GLENMORA MAN WAS KILLED IN A TWO-VEHICLE CRASH TUESDAY ON LA. HIGHWAY 121 NEAR HINESTON. 80 YEAR OLD FLOYD GOLEMAN WAS A PASSENGER IN VEHICLE BEING DRIVEN BY A 16-YEAR-OLD BOY. THE BOY WAS DRIVING SOUTH ON LA. 121 WHEN HE ATTEMPTED TO MAKE A LEFT TURN NORTH ONTO LA. 112. THE VEHICLE COLLIDED WITH AN 18 WHEELER BEING DRIVEN BY DAVID CARROLL OF HINESTON. GOLEMAN WAS PRONOUNCED DEAD AT RAPIDES REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER. THE JUVENILE DRIVER WAS NOT INJURED. TROOPERS CHARGED THE BOY WITH IMPROPER TURNING AND NO DRIVER'S LICENSE.

AN ALEXANDRIA WOMAN WAS SERIOUSLY HURT WEDNESDAY MORNING IN A SINGLE-VEHICLE CRASH ON U.S. HIGHWAY 167 NEAR WILLIANA THAT INJURED FOUR OTHERS. THE CRASH, SHORTLY BEFORE 11AM. TROOPERS SAY A VEHICLE DRIVEN BY 20 YEAR OLD ANDREA BENNETT LEFT HIGHWAY 167 AND HIT SOME TREES. FOUR PASSENGERS IN THE VEHICLE RECEIVED MINOR INJURIES

STATE POLICE SAYS A JAIL ESCAPEE, WHO IS ALSO ACCUSED OF ROBBING A BANK IN EVANGELINE PARISH TUESDAY MORNING, HAS BEEN CAPTURED IN OKLAHOMA. 42-YEAR-OLD BRIAN KEITH SOILEAU WAS TAKEN INTO CUSTODY AFTER A POLICE CHASE IN SUBURBAN OKLAHOMA CITY. SOILEAU TRIED TO FLEE THE OFFICERS AND ALSO EXCHANGED GUNFIRE, BEFORE HE WAS EVENTUALLY SHOT. SOILEAU ESCAPED FROM THE PINE PRAIRIE DETENTION CENTER ON OCTOBER 13TH.

AUTHORITIES FINALLY CAUGHT UP WITH THE WASHINGTON PARISH ESCAPEE WHO HAS ELUDED CAPTURE SINCE OCTOBER 12TH. KAUNDA MAGEE WAS SHOT AND CAPTURED JUST OFF A RURAL ROAD IN PIKE COUNTY, MISSISSIPPI. THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE HAS RESCINDED AN $80 MILLION GRANT AWARDED TO LOUISIANA LAST YEAR THAT WOULD HAVE EXPANDED THE REACH OF BROADBAND INTERNET TO RURAL AND POOR AREAS OF THE STATE. U.S. SEN. MARY LANDRIEU ON WEDNESDAY WAS DISAPPOINTED, SAYING THE "STATE WAS UNABLE OR UNWILLING TO MEET THE NECESSARY DEADLINES" TO MOVE THE PROJECT FORWARD. LANDRIEU SAYING, "DESPITE RECEIVING THE GREEN LIGHT FOR MORE THAN $80 MILLION IN FEDERAL FUNDS, THE STATE FUMBLED THE BALL AND WAS EITHER UNABLE OR UNWILLING TO COMPLETE THE PROJECT.”

FEDERAL REGULATORS HAVE GIVEN THEIR PERMISSION TO BP TO START DRILLING A NEW DEEPWATER WELL IN THE GULF OF MEXICO. THIS IS THE FIRST PERMIT GIVEN TO BP SINCE LAST YEAR'S DEEPWATER HORIZON DISASTER. EDUCATION CONSULTANT AIMS MCGUINNESS TOLD THE GOVERNANCE COMMISSION TUESDAY THAT THE HIGHER EDUCATION BOARDS AND SYSTEMS COULD USE MORE STATUTORY CLARITY IN THEIR ROLES, BUT THAT WHOLESALE CHANGES ARE NOT NEEDED.
