LOUISIANA'S UNEMPLOYMENT RATE IS AT ITS LOWEST LEVEL FOR THE YEAR. PATTY GRANIER, WITH THE LOUISIANA WORKFORCE COMMISSION, SAYS THE STATE'S UNEMPLOYMENT DROPPED FROM 7.6 PERCENT IN JULY TO 7.2 PERCENT IN AUGUST.
GRANIER SAYS THE LATEST LABOR NUMBERS ALSO SHOW THE PRIVATE SECTOR HAS ADDED 40-THOUSAND THOUSAND JOBS OVER THE YEAR. GRANIER SAYS LOUISIANA'S UNEMPLOYMENT RATE IS THE 13TH LOWEST IN THE NATION AND THIRD LOWEST IN THE SOUTHERN REGION. SHE SAYS THE STATE'S LABOR NUMBERS ARE TRENDING POSITIVELY.

AFTER SOME NICE WEATHER AT THE END OF LAST WEEK, GET READY FOR HUMID AND WARM TEMPERATURES FOR THE START OF THIS WEEK. STATE CLIMATOLOGIST BARRY KEIM SAYS WE ARE IN A TYPICAL SEPTEMBER WEATHER PATTERN. KEIM SAYS WE WILL CONTINUE TO SEE TEMPERATURES GOING UP AND DOWN THROUGH MID OCTOBER. AT LEAST THERE'S A GOOD CHANCE OF RAIN OVER THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS. BUT KEIM SAYS LA NINA CONDITIONS SHOULD KEEP LOUISIANA RELATIVELY DRY OVER THE NEXT FEW WEEKS

WE'RE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE HURRICANE SEASON, AND THE TROPICS ARE RELATIVELY QUIET. THE ONLY SYSTEM THE NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER IS TRACKING IS HURRICANE MARIA WHICH WILL HAVE NO IMPACT ON THE UNITED STATES. STATE CLIMATOLOGIST BARRY KEIM SAYS EVEN THOUGH THINGS ARE CALM RIGHT NOW, HE SUSPECTS THAT WILL CHANGE. KEIM SAYS WE'VE ALREADY HAD 14 NAMED STORMS WHICH MEANS THERE ARE ONLY 7 STORM NAMES LEFT IN THE 2011 HURRICANE NAME ROTATION. KEIM SAYS THE RISK OF A HURRICANE HITTING LOUISIANA RUNS THROUGH THE END OF OCTOBER. HE SAYS THE LANINA THAT HAS REFORMED WILL PROVIDE WILL PROVIDE FAVORABLE CONDITIONS FOR STORMS TO FORM...

FORMER GOVERNOR EDWIN EDWARDS IS SPEAKING TO THE BATON ROUGE PRESS CLUB TODAY. ALONG WITH HIS MANY PUBLIC APPEARANCES AROUND THE STATE, EDWARDS GIVES THE IMPRESSION OF BEING ON THE STUMP AGAIN. EDWARDS HAS BEEN MAKING A SERIES OF WELL PUBLICIZED APPEARANCES ACROSS THE STATE SINCE HE WAS RELEASED FROM CUSTODY. MOST OF EDWARDS' APPEARANCES HAVE BEEN A PART OF A BOOK TOUR TO PROMOTE HIS BIOGRAPHY.

SINCE THIS YEAR'S STATEWIDE ELECTIONS ARE NOT DRAWING MUCH INTEREST, POLITICOS ARE LOOKING AHEAD TO THE NEXT BIG STATEWIDE ELECTION IN 2014 WHEN SENATOR MARY LANDRIEU IS EXPECTED TO SEEK A FOURTH TERM. JOHN MAGINNIS, WITH LAPOLITICS.COM, SAYS THERE ARE SEVERAL REPUBLICANS WHO ARE ALREADY CONSIDERING THAT RACE. MAGINNIS SAYS WHETHER CONGRESSMAN JEFF LANDRY WINS OR LOSES NEXT YEAR'S ELECTION AGAINST CONGRESSMAN CHARLES BOUSTANY IN A NEWLY MERGED DISTRICT, HE'S GOT HIS SIGHTS SET ON A STATEWIDE RACE. HE SAYS, FOR NOW, LANDRIEU LOOKS VULNERABLE AS THE ONLY ELECTED DEMOCRAT IN THE STATE, BUT A LOT CAN CHANGE IN THREE YEARS.

A PANEL OF STATE LAWMAKERS UNANIMOUSLY APPROVES A NEW BUILDING & BUSINESS PLAN FOR THE PROPOSED $1-BILION RESEARCH & TEACHING HOSPITAL IN NEW ORLEANS. JOINT LEGISLATIVE BUDGET COMMITTEE CO-CHAIR JIM FANNIN SAYS THE STATE HAS AN OPPORTUNITY TO BUILD A WORLD-CLASS MEDICAL CENTER FOR THE REGION. THE HOSPITAL HAS BEEN IN PLANNING STAGES FOR SIX YEARS AND SUBJECT OF MUCH DISPUTE OVER IT'S SIZE, STRUCTURE AND COST. THE NEW PLAN WILL NOT REQUIRE ANY STATE-BACKED BORROWING. HOUSE SPEAKER JIM TUCKER, OF ALGIERS SAYS THE NEW 424-BED PLAN IS MUCH LESS COSTLY THAN PREVIOUS MODELS. STATE TREASURER JOHN KENNEDY WONDERS ABOUT COMPETITION FROM EXISTING NEW ORLEANS AREA HOSPITALS--WHO HE SAYS WON'T LIE DOWN AND GIVE UP BUSINESS TO THE NEW TEACHING FACILITY. FANNIN SAYS THE BUSINESS PLAN COVERS EVERY POINT THAT CONSULTANTS COULD CONCEIVE.

NATCHEZ POLICE SAY A LOUISIANA MAN HAS BEEN ARRESTED ON CHARGES OF WATCHING PORNOGRAPHIC MATERIAL INSIDE A LOCAL MCDONALD'S "PLAY PLACE" WHERE TWO CHILDREN WERE PLAYING. POLICE TELL THE NATCHEZ DEMOCRAT (HTTP://BIT.LY/NU8EKJ ) THAT 53-YEAR-OLD RONNIE L. HOBBS OF FERRIDAY, LA., WAS ARRESTED FRIDAY ON CHARGES OF PUBLIC DISPLAY OF SEXUALLY-ORIENTED MATERIALS AND CONTRIBUTING TO THE NEGLECT OR DELINQUENCY OF A CHILD. POLICE SAY OFFICERS COULD SEE THE IMAGES HOBBS WAS ALLEGEDLY VIEWING ON HIS COMPUTER FROM THE PARKING LOT AND DRIVE-THRU.

A NEW STUDY IN THE JOURNAL OF PEDIATRICS SHOWS THE NUMBER OF YOUNG CHILDREN TREATED FOR MEDICATION POISONING HAS RISEN 22-PERCENT. DR. MARK RYAN, DIRECTOR OF THE LOUISIANA POISON CONTROL CENTER, SAYS UNTIL RECENTLY, MOST POISONING CASES AMONG CHILDREN CAME FROM HOUSEHOLD PRODUCTS, BUT THAT HAS CHANGED IN THE LAST FEW YEARS. THE STUDY SHOWS PAIN MEDICATIONS, MUSCLE RELAXANTS, SLEEPING PILLS AND HEART MEDICATIONS ARE THE MOST DANGEROUS. RYAN SAYS FAILURE TO PROPERLY USE CHILD RESISTANT PACKAGING IS A MAJOR CAUSE FOR THE INCREASE IN MEDICATION POISONINGS. MANY MEDICATIONS AND HEALTH PRODUCTS SUCH AS VITAMINS, ESPECIALLY THOSE MADE FOR CHILDREN, ARE CANDY COATED OR MADE TO LOOK LIKE TREATS.

DREW BREES KEPT NEW ORLEANS' OFFENSE ROLLING, AND JAY CUTLER HAD LITTLE CHANCE OF KEEPING UP AGAINST A SAINTS DEFENSE DETERMINED TO REGAIN AN INTIMIDATING EDGE. BREES THREW FOR THREE TOUCHDOWNS, NEW ORLEANS' DEFENSE BEAT UP ON CUTLER WITH SIX SACKS, AND THE SAINTS DEFEATED THE CHICAGO BEARS 30-13 ON SUNDAY.
