A FIRE IN CROWLEY SUNDAY KILLED TWO SLEEPING CHILDREN. AUTHORITIES SAY THE TWO WERE 2 AND 4 YEARS OLD. FOUR OTHER PEOPLE ESCAPED THE BURNING HOUSE. IT’S BELIEVE THE FIRE STARTED IN THE MASTER BEDROOM AND QUICKLY SPREAD. INVESTIGATORS ALSO BELIEVE THE BLAZE WAS ACCIDENTAL.

ABOUT 170 SOLDIERS LEFT PINEVILLE ON SUNDAY, THE 10TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE SEPT. 11 TERRORIST ATTACKS, FOR THE WAR THAT STARTED IN AFGHANISTAN AFTER THOSE ATTACKS. THEY WERE SEEN OFF BY GOV. BOBBY JINDAL AND MAJ. GEN. BENNETT C. LANDRENEAU, ADJUTANT GENERAL OF THE LOUISIANA ARMY NATIONAL GUARD.

MOST BELIEVE JONES, THE CURRENT SUPERINTENDENT OF THE YEAR, WOULD BE A PLUS TO ANY SYSTEM. JONES HAS BEEN THE RAPIDES SUPERINTENDENT SINCE 2003 . PRIOR TO THAT, HE WAS CLAIBORNE PARISH'S SUPERINTENDENT FROM 1999-2003.

ALEXANDRIA POLICE ARE INVESTIGATING THE DEATH OF A PEDESTRIAN FOUND IN THE MEDIAN OF INTERSTATE 49 NEAR AIRBASE ROAD. POLICE RESPONDED TO THE SCENE SHORTLY BEFORE 6 SATURDAY MORNING, AFTER A DRIVER REPORTED THAT SHE HIT SOMETHING WITH HER VEHICLE WHILE TRAVELING SOUTHBOUND ON I-49. ALEXANDRIA POLICE AND ACADIAN AMBULANCE PERSONNEL FOUND AN UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE IN THE MEDIAN. SHE WAS PRONOUNCED DEAD AT THE SCENE. DURING THE INVESTIGATION, AN ALEXANDRIA POLICE CAR WAS STRUCK BY ANOTHER VEHICLE. THE OFFICER INSIDE RECEIVED MODERATE INJURIES.

WHILE THEY HOPE TO ONE DAY KNOW JUST HOW AND WHY THEY WERE FALSELY ACCUSED IN A CHILD SEX CASE INVOLVING THREE YOUNG GIRLS, THE OWNERS OF THE PIG STAND RESTAURANT IN VILLE PLATTE LAST WEEK CHOSE INSTEAD TO FOCUS ON THE FUTURE RATHER THAN LOOKING BACK. IN A PRESS CONFERENCE FRIDAY, 57 YEAR OLD BARRY GIGLIO TOLD THE ASSEMBLED HE WANTED TO CLEAR HIS NAME. GIGLIO WAS FLANKED ON EITHER SIDE BY HIS WIFE, TWO ATTORNEYS AND A PRIVATE INVESTIGATOR. A GRAND JURY LAST WEEK DECLINED RAPE CHARGES AGAINST BARRY AND MARLA GIGLIO, AND SIX OTHERS WHO HAD BEEN ACCUSED IN THE CHILD SEX INVESTIGATION.

THE LA NINA THAT CAUSED EXTREME WEATHER DURING THE FIRST HALF OF 2011, IS BACK. STATE CLIMATOLOGIST BARRY KEIM SAYS LA NINA IS A COLD WATER POOL THAT DEVELOPS IN THE TROPICAL PACIFIC OCEAN THAT EFFECTS CLIMATE ALL ACROSS THE GLOBE. KEIM SAYS THE LA NINA WILL LIKELY MEAN LOUISIANA WILL SUFFER FROM DROUGHT CONDITIONS AGAIN DURING THE FALL. HE SAYS IT ALSO MEANS THE HURRICANE SEASON WILL CONTINUE TO REMAIN ACTIVE. KEIM SAYS LA NINA CONDITIONS TEND TO MAKE THE AIR DRIER AND WARMER THAN NORMAL IN LOUISIANA. HE SAYS THE LA NINA COULD LAST FOR SEVERAL MONTHS.

TROPICAL STORM MARIA IS MOVING AWAY FROM THE NORTHEASTERN CARIBBEAN ISLANDS WITH LITTLE CHANGE IN STRENGTH FORECAST. MARIA'S MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS EARLY MONDAY ARE NEAR 60 MPH. THE STORM IS CENTERED ABOUT 165 MILES NORTH OF SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO, AND IS MOVING NORTHWEST NEAR 9 MPH. THE U.S. NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER SAYS THE STORM'S CENTER IS EXPECTED TO PASS WELL EAST OF THE SOUTHEASTERN BAHAMAS. MARIA'S FORECAST TRACK SHOWS IT EVENTUALLY CURVING AWAY FROM THE U.S.

SEVEN OF 10 OIL WORKERS MISSING IN THE GULF OF MEXICO WERE FOUND ALIVE SUNDAY, THREE DAYS AFTER EVACUATING THEIR DISABLED RIG IN A TROPICAL STORM AND ESCAPING IN AN ENCLOSED LIFE RAFT. TWO BODIES ALSO WERE FOUND BUT HAVE YET TO BE IDENTIFIED. RESCUERS ARE STILL SEARCHING FOR ONE WORKER WHO REMAINS MISSING.

A 21-YEAR-OLD MAN TURNED HIMSELF IN SUNDAY TO FACE CHARGES IN THE SHOOTING DEATHS OF A 76-YEAR-OLD WOMAN AND TWO TEENAGE WOMEN, AND THE WOUNDING OF A MAN WHO SURVIVED. AUTHORITIES SAY COURTNEY WILLIAMS WAS BOOKED WITH THREE COUNTS OF FIRST-DEGREE MURDER AND ONE OF ATTEMPTED FIRST-DEGREE MURDER.
HE WAS BEING HELD WITHOUT BOND ON THE MURDER CHARGES. INVESTIGATORS CONSIDER THE SHOOTING AN INCIDENT OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE.

BICYCLE ROUTE 90 IS ONE OF SEVERAL TRAILS BEING CREATED NATIONWIDE FOR LONG-DISTANCE BICYCLE TRAVEL. FOR THE MOST PART, IT FOLLOWS U.S. HIGHWAY 90 FROM ST. AUGUSTINE, FLA., TO SAN DIEGO.
