Louisianians are once again waking up to cooler feeling weather outside here on this last week in July. State Climatologist Barry Keim says this less humid air is very similar to the cold front we had a couple of weeks ago. Keim says the lower humidity is going to last most of the week and could even go into the front part of this weekend. It’s uncommon to have one cold front this time of year, much less two.

 

Authorization for new VA clinics in Lafayette and Lake Charles is one step closer to reality according to Lafayette Congressman Charles Boustany. Boustany received confirmation that authorization for the two new clinics will be included in the final draft of a bipartisan bill on VA legislation. Boustany expects both houses of Congress to vote on the measure this week. He says funding for the construction of these new clinics is not included this legislation. But Boustany says if this bill passes, it will clear the way for funding.

 

The Louisiana Supreme Court has announces a replacement Phillip Terrell, who resigned as Pineville city judge in March to run for Rapides Parish District Attorney. Long time Pineville attorney Mike Johnson, will take the position of judge pro temp Friday, and he is scheduled remain in the position through the end of the year. A permanent judge will be chosen in the fall elections. As city judge, Johnson will be responsible for hearing cases from within the Pineville city limits, as well as Wards 9, 10 and 11.

 

The state’s top school board will hold its second special meeting in less than a month today in the battle over Common Core. The key issue is whether and how the state Board of Elementary and Secondary Education will proceed on a possible legal challenge over tests that are supposed to accompany the new academic standards. One possibility is for BESE to join a pro-Common Core lawsuit filed last week by parents and teachers.

 

A Shreveport man is dead after being shot inside his home following a reported home invasion very early Monday morning. Shreveport Police say forty-eight year-old William David Carroll was reportedly shot once in the upper body inside his Highland residence near Centenary College.

 

A Lake Charles woman has been arrested for leaving her three young children in a locked car for over an hour. Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s deputies arrested 26 year-old Faith LaFleur on 3 counts of cruelty to a juvenile. The children, aged 5, 2, and 11 months have been placed in the care of family members.

 

The Ascension Parish Sheriff’s office is in mourning today after a 32-year veteran of the department drowned Sunday while trying to rescue his dog from a pond. Lt. Col. Bobby Webre says 56-year-old Sam Vitter’s Yorkshire Terrier went in the pond running after some wildlife. He says Vitter went in and rescued the dog, but never resurfaced. Webre says they aren’t exactly sure what happened to cause the drowning.

 

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is investigating a rare hit-and-run boating crash. L-D-W-F’s Adam Einck says the incident happened Saturday night on the Amite River Diversion Canal in Livingston Parish when one ski boat was rear ended and run over by another ski boat.  He says that boat was last seen speeding through a wake zone. Three people on the ski boat that was struck were treated for minor injuries.

 

A Baton Rouge man is in jail following a rape of a woman he met through a social media app. East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Casey Hicks, following an incident like this, she reminds everyone to be extremely cautious about meeting people through social media, and never meet them at your home. Twenty-two year-old Jacob Witz is charged with one count of forcible rape.

 

As the spicy food trend spreads across the country, the hot sauce market is growing by leaps and bounds. Since 2000, the US hot sauce market has grown by 150 percent, according to a story by Atlantic Media’s Quartz. President and CEO of New Iberia-based Bruce Foods, Si Brown, says they have definitely noticed the trend. Hot sauce sales have increased 6-percent annually for the past 10 years.
